Nigel Scaife is a British pianist, teacher and influential figure in piano education, best known for his long association with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). His work has combined performing, teaching, examining and syllabus development, giving him a distinctive place in the practical musical life of the United Kingdom.

As a pianist, Scaife has maintained a broad interest in the instrument’s repertoire, technique and history. Alongside his concert and educational work, he has been closely involved with the world of pianos themselves, becoming recognised as a knowledgeable collector, restorer and dealer. His business, The Piano Shop at Eridge in East Sussex, has handled instruments ranging from modern uprights and digital pianos to historic grand pianos by makers such as Bechstein, Blüthner and Steinway.

One particularly notable acquisition was an 1821 Broadwood grand piano originally supplied to King George IV for the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. The rosewood instrument, richly decorated with brass inlay, is historically important both for its royal provenance and for its early construction: it was made before iron reinforcement became standard in piano frames. Scaife has spoken of the responsibility of restoring such instruments sympathetically and of allowing them to be heard in repertoire appropriate to their period.

In education, Scaife has been especially associated with ABRSM as its Syllabus Director, contributing to the shaping of piano examination repertoire and standards. His role has placed him at the centre of discussions about how pianists are taught, assessed and encouraged, from beginners through to advanced students. He has also participated in professional forums concerned with piano teaching, including events organised by the Oxford Piano Group, where he joined teachers and educational specialists in examining the meaning of professionalism in private piano teaching.

Scaife’s career reflects a practical, wide-ranging commitment to the piano: as a performing instrument, an object of craftsmanship and history, and a means of musical education.
