HAYDN BENDALL ROCK HISTORY - EPISODE THREE

Haydn Bendall (born 13 April 1951 in Essex, England) is one of the most respected recording engineers and producers to emerge from the British recording industry. Best known for his long association with the legendary Abbey Road Studios, Bendall spent seventeen years at the world-famous facility, including more than a decade as its Chief Engineer, helping to shape some of the most acclaimed recordings of the late twentieth century.

Bendall’s path into music began at Orange Studios in Soho before he worked as a piano tuner and concert technician for Steinway & Sons⁠. Through contacts made in the recording world, he joined Abbey Road in the early 1970s as a part-time assistant under the guidance of renowned studio manager Ken Townsend. After securing a full-time position, he rose steadily through the ranks, gaining experience across classical, pop, rock, jazz and film soundtrack sessions.

During his Abbey Road years, Bendall worked with an extraordinary range of artists, including Kate Bush, Paul McCartney, Tina Turner, David Gilmour, Massive Attack and XTC. He is particularly celebrated for his engineering work on several of Kate Bush’s landmark albums, including The Dreaming, Hounds of Love, The Sensual World and The Red Shoes.

His film soundtrack credits include work on The Last Emperor, whose soundtrack won both Academy and Grammy Awards, and numerous other major productions. After leaving Abbey Road in 1991, Bendall established himself as an independent producer and engineer, collaborating with artists such as Pet Shop Boys, Pat Metheny, Katie Melua, Chris Botti and Van Morrison.

Widely admired for his technical excellence, musical sensitivity and versatility across genres, Bendall remains an influential figure in recording production and audio education, regularly sharing his experience with the next generation of engineers and producers.
