ROCK HISTORY - ERIC HALL

ERIC HALL

Music Executive

Eric Hall (1937–2020) was a flamboyant and influential British music promoter and record plugger whose larger-than-life personality made him one of the most recognizable figures in the UK entertainment industry. Known for his catchphrase “Monsters! Monsters!” and his exuberant, theatrical style, Hall became synonymous with high-energy promotion during the 1970s and 1980s.
Hall began his career in the music business in the 1960s, initially working behind the scenes in promotion. He rose to prominence as a top record plugger—an industry role focused on persuading radio stations and television producers to feature particular artists. At a time when airplay could make or break a hit, Hall’s persuasive skills, relentless enthusiasm, and vast network of contacts made him highly sought after by major labels.
Over the course of his career, Hall worked with a wide range of artists across genres. He was closely associated with acts such as Showaddywaddy, Shakin' Stevens, and Queen, helping to secure crucial exposure that contributed to their chart success. His promotional campaigns were marked by boldness and persistence, and he became known for turning songs into hits through sheer force of personality.
Beyond music, Hall also represented sports personalities, most notably boxer Frank Bruno, whom he managed for a period. His crossover into sports management further cemented his reputation as a showman and master publicist.
In later years, Hall became a familiar media personality in his own right, appearing on television and radio and cultivating a public image that was both brash and affectionate. Despite changes in the music industry, he remained a symbol of a bygone era of hands-on promotion.
Eric Hall died in 2020 at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy defined by charisma, tenacity, and an unmistakable presence in British popular culture.
