ROCK HISTORY ED BICKNELL EPISODE TWO

ED BICKNELL

Drummer, Music Executive

EPISODE TWO - INTERVIEW FROM 2008

Ed Bicknell was one of the most influential and respected managers in modern rock music, best known for guiding Dire Straits from a promising British band into one of the biggest global acts of the late twentieth century. Born in England, Bicknell began his career in the music industry during the 1960s and 1970s, gaining experience as a tour manager and promoter at a time when live performance was becoming central to an artist’s success. His reputation for professionalism, calm authority, and artist-first thinking soon set him apart.

Bicknell became manager of Dire Straits in the late 1970s, just as the band was emerging with its self-titled debut album. Working closely with frontman Mark Knopfler, he played a crucial role in shaping the group’s long-term strategy. Rather than chasing short-term hype, Bicknell emphasized careful touring, strong production values, and artistic integrity. This approach paid off as Dire Straits steadily built an international audience through albums such as Communiqué, Making Movies, and Love Over Gold.

At the peak of the band’s success in the mid-1980s, Bicknell oversaw some of the largest and most ambitious tours in rock history, including the monumental Brothers in Arms world tour. He was widely admired for his logistical skill and his ability to protect artists from the excesses of fame, ensuring that tours were efficient, humane, and musically focused. His management style was firm but fair, rooted in mutual trust and long-term vision.

Beyond Dire Straits, Ed Bicknell also managed and worked with other notable artists, like Gerry Rafferty and Bryan Ferry, reinforcing his reputation as a manager who understood both the business and the creative sides of music. He remained a vocal advocate for artists’ rights and live music throughout his life. Bicknell’s legacy endures as a model of intelligent, artist-centered management in an often volatile industry.
