Carol Wilson is a pioneering British music industry executive whose career has spanned senior leadership roles, artist development, and innovation in record label management. She is best known for her work during the late 1970s and 1980s, when she became one of the most influential female executives in a male-dominated industry. Notably, she was the founder of the DinDisc label, widely recognised as the first chart-topping record label established by a woman.

Wilson held senior positions at major companies including Virgin Records, Island Records, Warner Bros. Records, and PolyGram, where she worked at board level and helped shape commercial and creative strategy. Her tenure at these organisations placed her at the centre of the evolving UK music business during the post-punk and new wave era.

Through DinDisc and her wider A&R work, Wilson played a crucial role in discovering, signing, and promoting a number of highly significant artists. Among the most notable were The Human League, whose breakthrough success helped define early 1980s electronic pop, and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, another key act in the synth-pop movement. She was also associated with artists such as Sting, Tom Petty, Iggy Pop, Buzzcocks, and composer Philip Glass, demonstrating the breadth of her musical reach across genres.

Later in her career, Wilson transitioned into corporate leadership and coaching, becoming Managing Director at Virgin and subsequently founding the consultancy Culture at Work. In this phase, she worked closely with figures such as Richard Branson and became a prominent advocate of performance coaching and leadership development.

Carol Wilson’s legacy lies in both her commercial success and her role in opening pathways for women in senior music industry positions, while helping to shape the sound and business of British popular music in a formative era.
