BRYN HAWORTH - EPISODE TWO

MUSICIAN, GUITARIST, SINGER, SONGWRITER, COMPOSER

Bryn Haworth (born 29 July 1948) is a British Christian guitarist, singer, and songwriter, widely regarded as a pioneer of “Jesus music” within the UK rock scene. His career spans more than five decades, combining mainstream rock credentials with a later commitment to Christian ministry.

Haworth was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, and raised in nearby Darwen. From an early age he was immersed in music, influenced by artists such as Elvis Presley and Little Richard, whose records his mother played at home.

He received his first guitar at age 11 and studied classical guitar briefly before becoming involved in local bands during the 1960s beat boom inspired by groups like The Beatles.

As a teenager, he moved to London to pursue music, at one point experiencing homelessness before establishing himself in the city’s music scene.

Haworth’s professional breakthrough came when he joined the band Fleur de Lys, a London-based soul and psychedelic group that served as a house band for Atlantic Records.

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, he built a reputation as a skilled session guitarist and performer. He played alongside and toured with major artists including:
• Jimi Hendrix (with whom he famously jammed)
• Led Zeppelin
• Jefferson Airplane
• Taj Mahal

He also worked extensively as a session musician with artists such as Gerry Rafferty, Joan Armatrading, and Cliff Richard.

In 1973, after returning from the United States (including time in Woodstock), he launched his solo career, signing to Island Records and releasing his debut album Let the Days Go By.

A pivotal moment came in 1974 when Haworth and his wife Sally became Christians. This experience profoundly reshaped his musical direction, leading him to integrate gospel themes into his work.

From that point onward, he became a key figure in Christian rock and gospel blues, producing numerous albums that blended rock, folk, country, and spiritual themes. Over his career, he has released more than twenty albums.

He is especially known for his expressive slide (bottleneck) guitar style, which has earned him recognition as a “musician’s musician” within the industry.
