ALLAN MCGOWAN

MUSIC EXECUTIVE - Manager, Agent, Promoter, Editor, and Journalist

Allan McGowan was a multifaceted figure in the British music industry, known for his work as a manager, agent, promoter, editor, and journalist. Active primarily in the mid-20th century, McGowan played an important behind-the-scenes role in shaping the postwar popular music landscape in the United Kingdom.

McGowan first came to prominence through his work in music journalism. He contributed to and later edited influential trade and fan publications, helping to bridge the gap between the music business and its growing audience. His writing combined industry insight with an accessible style, making him a respected voice among both professionals and enthusiasts. Through editorial work, he supported emerging artists and documented key developments in British popular music during a period of rapid change. McGowan was the founding editor of IQ Magazine.

In addition to journalism, McGowan was deeply involved in artist management and booking. As an agent and manager, he worked with a variety of performers, helping to secure engagements and guide their careers in an increasingly competitive market. His understanding of both the creative and commercial sides of the industry made him particularly effective in this role.

McGowan was also active as a promoter, organizing concerts and events that brought live music to wider audiences. At a time when the infrastructure for touring and promotion was still developing, his efforts contributed to the professionalization of live performance circuits in Britain. He demonstrated a keen sense for audience tastes and emerging trends, often championing acts before they achieved mainstream success.

He’s credited as one of the first agents to work out multi-date touring circuits, a given in today’s live entertainment business.
As panel moderator and consultant, he has helped shape many of today’s well-known music conferences, including MIDEM, ILMC, ESNS, MaMa and more.

Throughout his career, Allan McGowan exemplified the versatility required in the evolving music business. By moving fluidly between journalism, management, and promotion, he helped shape the ecosystem that supported British popular music in the decades following the Second World War.
